Born in New Orleans in 1982, Wendell Brunious (WOKE) began designing logos and t-shirts as a teenager. Having grown up on cartoons, graffiti, hip-hop and sneaker culture, WOKE uses imagery associated with these themes as subject matter for his work. With a background in graphic design and printmaking, his work expresses the interplay of commercial imagery and abstract form. Inspired by pop art, he uses bright colors and commercial graphics, which denote the consumer mind-set of modern culture. By displaying commercial images as fragmented sections arranged throughout multiple layers, these images lose their narrative momentum and become abstracted visuals. Drawing inspiration from pop culture artists as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein along with the abstract notions of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly, the works display coexistence of banal imagery and abstract form. The merging of these two concepts presents a complex composition of balance, color and information.
